Welcome to Space Race, a children's outdoor station game.
This project was for a live client called WorldsApart, a children's toy and furniture design company. With this product I was able to present my product at their Cornwall office and win their best toy award, winning a placement with them over the summer holiday period of 2013.
Space Race is a game for two teams and one other child who is the station protector. The idea of the game is that both teams must hide first and then try and reach the yellow paddle spaceship and spin it to their teams coloured Alien. However, beware of the station protector as he or she will be on the hunt to tag the team members to get them out of the game for 30 seconds. Both teams need to hide, run and think of a strategy to reach the spaceship paddles and get the spaceship to their alien. The toy deconsructs down to its base, giving the product a compact method of storage by using torllerant fittings. As the base is blow moulded, it allows the base to be filled with water giving the product stability when in game use. For the Alien characters I wanted to create something that had an approachable presence so I kept their forms as soft as possible. However, I wanted a mean expression to be shown on the Aliens' face to boost the competitiveness in the two teams. Inspiration was taken from drawings from a class of children within Sheffield. |
Packaging.
Packaging was also important within this design. I did not want to put everything in a conventional box, I wanted the product to sell itself the product without being confined by packaging. I created a simple cardboard wrap that holds the whole product together, allowing the handle to be a hook for a point of sales display.
