Orbi Care is a glucose monitoring kit for children aged 5-10. It allows the child to set up a monitor for a day worth of testing, with a safe way of inserting new needles. This makes the child feel comfortable around others and allows them to connect with their condition. The product takes a condition that can be scary and makes a child feel like they have more control, through personalisation and rewards. It enables parents, children and nurses to review glucose readings through fun graphics, which will lower a child’s bewilderment, while also being educational. Project supported by the Sheffield Children's Hospital.
The benefits of an Orbi Care monitor is that the child inserts a strip wheel cartridge that supplies them with a days worth of testing. This also makes them change the cartridge everyday to make sure a level of education remains instead of the monitor doing it for them. In terms of the inserting a new needle this is achieved by a needle ring which also contains a days worth of testing, it is inserted into the lancet device and when pulled away the needle is left behind. The needle ring is also a visual communicator showing the user how many needles they have left.
Below, shows how the user process has been considered. To prime the lancet, the user slides the primer this action causes a reaction with the trigger button which pops out of the side of the device telling the user it is ready to use. The child places the finger for testing on the testing area and pushes the button to release the needle into the finger, this action also causes the button to stay in.

Needle Ring Refill
To save material during manufacture the casing for the needle ring is in two halves and held together by a 90 degree turning locking pin. This allows the user to access the needle ring inside, meaning that these can be changed. refreshed and ready to go.
Device Readings
The screen on the device is important for a child's understanding of their results, however with Orbi Care it has been designed to not bewilder/ worry a child through colour but also visual communicators, i.e. a star to show they are okay. The touch screen visuals are available in a variety of colours to allow the child feel in control of their device through a personalisation technique. In addition there is a menu to allow them to look through past results of that day or previous results during the week, this is beneficial for a nurse or parent also.
Docking and NFC Data Transfer
Two additional ways of extracting the results is through a dock this dock also chargers the device, once connected the information can be transferred to a computer software. For this project I focused on the app as the monitor has a NFC chip meaning that the parent can tab the monitor with their phone extracting the data with limited effort.
The app below allows the parent and child to look at their results of that day or pervious results. There is a section for rewards which is given to a child to keep the child connected with their condition and finally a store to allow the parent to order new test strips, needles and case (which comes in a variety of colours)

Orbi Care Case
Protection for the monitor is important so I have designed a clamshell hard case the stores the monitor and the needle ring. When opened it presents the devices in a clear approachable manor. and a sense of protection is increased by closed cell foam insert holding the needle ring but also protecting the screen.
Most importantly the child needs to feel a connection with their condition so this is lifted by the child being able to pick the colour of the case that reflects their personality making them feel cool before it even arrives.
